Who are you?
Lao Tsu twisty philosopher(6th century BC)
quoting author of fiction Shakespeare (26 April 1564 – 23 April 1616)

The end of Shakespeare's quote asks
"And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?"
But who would be taking revenge? How many entities, based on which aspect of the fiction, based on our misunderstanding of Lao Tsu, based on our disagreement with Shakespeare, or based on some misfit with the real intent of the person or people like Oz who sit behind the screens. We cannot poison you. Behind every avatar can be a diaspora, or not.

A nickname is a layer of fiction around identity, speaking as the fictitious entity adds a layer of fiction around the voice, speaking in the voice of an author of fiction adds another layer of distance.

Under that many layers it would be like a padded toreador horse, difficult to tell if it is pricked or wounded or not. Possibly masked for the comfort of the audience, rather than the comfort of the horse. But possibly more like a Chinese dragon with many people underneath, part folly and part serious purpose. What is authentic? What is intended?
What value is durable beyond the whimsy of the moment?

Would any of the avatars trust their hand to another avatar if they could not see back stage? If they were not one person?
What does the connection mean to you?

The Zen connection, or the way, lives within you.

For me a Zen connection is little bit like the wind: You can't grab it in your hand, but you can breathe it in and feel it and let it become part of you.

The goal is always pure connection. When you are fully connected, no separation exists between you and your performance, you and your experience, you and the person with whom you are interacting, you and nature. You are pure and connected as one. (Orlick. p.136-7)

Is a nickname a layer of fiction around an identity, or is the identity the centre of gravity of the numerous layers and roles we adopt and enact in different communities? Is our perception of our identity at all the same as the identity others perceive us to have? How many of us make conscious choices about what to project as our identity, either in the real world or online?

If anyone in cck08 has a story to tell relating to their choices of identity either here, online in general, or in real life, I would be most interested in hearing them. We have a project which is designing learning materials relating to Digital Identity called This Is Me - the website is in its infancy, based on elgg, and at http://thisisme.reading.ac.uk if you are interested in making a contribution!

And especial thanks to Janet for DMing me to let me know this discussion was taking place in CCK08. I have been lax in visiting recently (thank God I hear you cry) as work pressures have mounted... plus I really didn't like that abuse of power a little while ago, which de-motivated me considerably.
