Is it all just context?

Management theories often differentiate between the autocratic style (control through groups?) and collegial styles (freedom through networks?).

In our vocational education system I can translate these differences to:

  • teaching students where there are licensing requirements eg a plumber or an electrician, where strict adherence to legislation and safety issues means things must be done a certain way.
  • teaching students a range of employability skills such as team work, communication and problem solving which require the ability to come with innovative and often uncertain conclusions.

So the type of network (or group) we set up for our students and colleagues will vary according to the context.

You bring up some good points Grant.

I don't think it's quite as straight-forward though. I think the type of network (or group) is always adjusting itself. Teaching skills lends itself to more of a behaviourism approach at first but there still needs to be some of the collegial style approach - even for the plumber or electrician types. Strict adherence to legislation is a must but ability is still needed to troubleshoot problems (like my leaking dishwasher).

We need to set up a flexible network (or group) design that will allow whatever approach works best for the students at that particular point in their program.

Thanks for the comment Jim. I do agree with you re constant adjustment - the design of our learning experiences must match the purpose, part of the problem is probably trying to summarise thoughts which are complex. I also prefer the behaviourist approaches but I do know of many teachers who still prefer the more autocratic style.

  Yes.

The way you know whether these learning theories like Connectivism are worth anything is whether they help you get a job in anything other than...teaching Connectivism.
